Marketing Partnership Case Study
Nordstrom + Sonic Guild
Partnership Overview
Partner: Nordstrom
Program/Activation: Nordstrom Block Party
Timing: July 18, 2026
Locations: Seattle, Portland, and Chicago
Summary: Sonic Guild partnered with Nordstrom to curate live music for the company's 2026 Block Party celebrations in Seattle, Portland, and Chicago that aligned with their annual Anniversary Sale. By programming acclaimed local musicians in each market, the partnership transformed indoor and outdoor spaces adjacent to Nordstrom locations into vibrant community gathering places while creating paid performance opportunities for independent artists. The collaboration demonstrated how authentic local music can strengthen customer engagement, celebrate regional culture, and reinforce a company's commitment to the communities it serves.
Objectives
The partnership was designed with three primary objectives. First, to create memorable customer experiences by featuring authentic local artists who reflected the culture and creative identity of each city. Second, to strengthen Nordstrom's connection to the communities where it operates by investing directly in local musicians and cultural organizations. Third, to generate meaningful paid opportunities for independent artists while increasing their visibility through performances in front of thousands of attendees.
Strategy
The partnership centered on the belief that local musicians are among the most authentic ambassadors for their communities. Rather than presenting generic entertainment, Sonic Guild curated artists whose music and stories represented the unique character of Seattle, Portland, and Chicago.
Programming emphasized artistic excellence alongside community relevance, creating performances that resonated with local audiences while introducing Nordstrom customers to exceptional independent musicians. The strategy aligned Nordstrom's community-first values with Sonic Guild's mission to build sustainable careers for independent artists, resulting in an experience that felt authentic rather than promotional.
Execution
Sonic Guild managed the complete music programming process, identifying, booking, and coordinating artists across three cities while serving as the primary liaison between performers and Nordstrom's event production teams.
The curated lineup reflected the diversity and strength of each local music community, featuring artists including Chicago's five-time Grammy-nominated children's musician Justin Roberts and and The Not Ready For Naptime Players and internationally recognized blues artist Ivan Singh, alongside Pacific Northwest favorites Sera Cahoone, Haley Johnson, Marshall Law Band, and Tacoma's rising artist Meldrop. Eleven artists performed in total across the three markets.
Each artist received professional compensation while benefiting from exposure to thousands of attendees in highly visible public settings. Sonic Guild coordinated artist communications, scheduling, production needs, and event logistics to ensure seamless execution across all three markets.
The partnership also demonstrated the importance of flexibility and collaboration. In the days before the Chicago event, wildfire smoke created unsafe outdoor conditions, requiring the Block Party to relocate indoors, an event expecting thousands to attend within 24 hours' notice. Working alongside Nordstrom and production partners, Sonic Guild quickly adapted artist logistics and schedules, ensuring the event proceeded successfully inside the adjoining mall without compromising the audience experience.
From planning through execution, Sonic Guild provided artist curation, contracting, scheduling, communications, and production coordination, allowing Nordstrom to focus on delivering an exceptional customer experience while ensuring participating musicians were fully supported.
Results / Impact
The Nordstrom Block Party partnership successfully transformed retail environments into vibrant community gathering spaces through locally curated music experiences.
10,000+ customers across Seattle, Portland, and Chicago experienced performances by outstanding independent musicians, reinforcing Nordstrom's commitment to supporting the communities where it operates. The events created meaningful opportunities for discovery, bringing new audiences to local artists while enhancing the overall customer experience.
Despite significant weather-related challenges in Chicago, all scheduled performances were successfully presented, demonstrating the resilience of the partnership and the value of experienced artist and production coordination.
Artist / Community Impact
The partnership generated paid performance opportunities for independent musicians while introducing their work to new audiences outside of traditional music venues.
Artists gained increased visibility through performances aligned with one of the nation's most recognized retail brands, expanding awareness of their work among diverse community audiences. At the same time, local communities benefited from free, accessible live music experiences that celebrated the creativity and cultural identity of their cities.
The collaboration reinforced the important role independent musicians play in strengthening civic identity and creating meaningful public experiences.
Partner Value
The partnership enabled Nordstrom to deliver authentic, locally relevant experiences that strengthened customer engagement while demonstrating meaningful investment in the arts.
Rather than relying on generic entertainment, the company showcased musicians with genuine ties to each community, creating experiences that reflected the unique character of Seattle, Portland, and Chicago. This approach reinforced Nordstrom's longstanding commitment to community engagement while generating positive brand association through support of local artists.
As Jin Churchill, Nordstrom's Events & Experiences team, reflected:
"Working with Sonic Guild helped us celebrate local musicians and create Block Party experiences that felt authentic, meaningful, and connected across three different cities."
By partnering with Sonic Guild, Nordstrom also benefited from a trusted music curation partner with deep relationships across multiple regional music ecosystems, ensuring exceptional programming while simplifying artist management, artist relations, and production coordination.
Key Takeaways
The partnership demonstrated that thoughtfully curated local music creates deeper and more memorable customer experiences than traditional event entertainment.
It also highlighted the value of working with community-based cultural organizations that understand local creative ecosystems and can identify artists who authentically represent their cities.
Finally, the successful execution across three markets, including a same-day venue relocation in Chicago, underscored the importance of experienced artist management, collaborative partnerships, and operational flexibility when delivering large-scale public events.
