Every year, thousands of music fans, artists, and industry professionals come together to help invest in the future of music. Sonic Guild Artist Grants are unrestricted grants awarded annually to emerging and mid-career musicians. Unlike many grants, there are no creative restrictions, no ownership requirements, and no expectation that artists repay the funding. Whether the money goes toward recording an album, replacing equipment, touring, paying rent while finishing a project, or simply creating space to make art, the decision belongs entirely to the artist. Because we believe artists know best what they need.
Grant Awards
Artist Grants are awarded annually, typically during Sonic Guild's Grant Celebration each December in Austin and February in Seattle. Grant amounts generally range from $5,000 to $10,000+, depending on available funding and annual fundraising efforts. Every dollar comes from a community that believes local music deserves meaningful investment.
Community Driven Selection
What makes Sonic Guild unique is that artists are selected by the music community itself.
Grant recipients are chosen through a collaborative voting process that brings together three perspectives:
Past Sonic Guild grant recipients, who understand firsthand what it takes to build a career as an independent artist.
Music industry advisors, including professionals with deep knowledge of the local music ecosystem.
Sonic Guild members, whose membership directly helps fund the grants and gives them a voice in supporting the next generation of artists.
Together, these groups help identify musicians whose work is making an impact and whose careers can benefit from meaningful investment.
Artists Keep Full Ownership
One thing that makes Sonic Guild different is what we don't ask for. Artists retain 100% ownership of their music, recordings, publishing, and creative work. There are no equity agreements, royalty splits, or ownership claims attached to the funding. The grants exist to help artists move their careers forward while remaining fully in control of their art.
More Than Funding
While ten artists receive Artist Grants each year, the nomination process celebrates hundreds more. Every nomination shines a light on the incredible breadth of the local music community and helps introduce new artists to audiences, industry professionals, and fellow musicians.
Many nominated artists go on to perform at Sonic Guild showcases, receive Tour Support or Producer Grants, connect with collaborators, or become future Artist Grant recipients.
In other words, being nominated isn't just the beginning of the grant process. It's often the beginning of a deeper relationship with Sonic Guild.
Support the Next Generation of Local Music
Sonic Guild Artist Grants are funded by people who believe great music deserves great support. Membership dues, donations, sponsors, and fundraising events make it possible to invest directly in local musicians year after year. When you become a Sonic Guild member, you're doing more than attending incredible shows. You're helping independent artists create their next album, book their next tour, and build sustainable careers while strengthening Seattle's music community for everyone.
